Legion Park Elementary
Brief History
Legion Park Elementary was built in 1964 and opened his doors for
the 1964-1965 school year. Two names were considered: Legion and Cowboy's
Reunion. Legion Park was chosen, naming it after the street, though
the land on which the school was built had been traded to the school
district by the American Legion. Legion Park originally had eight
classrooms with eight full time teachersand one part-time teacher.
The first principal, over grades one through six, was Mrs. Margaret
Goddard, and approximately 200 students attended.
In just a few years classes swelled with an increase in enrollment,
but for the most part the class sizes remained in the low and mid
20's. In the begining of 1970's the sixth graders moved to the Memorial
Middle School, and Legion Park's highest grade became fifth.
In 1976 Mrs. Margaret Goddard retired and Mr. Freddie Baca became
the principal in the fall of 1976. He remained with Legion Park until
his retirement in 1983, when Mrs. Lucille Stanfield came to Legion
Park as the new principal. Mrs. Stanfield remained as principal until
1996 when she became the Federal Programs Director for the district
and was moved to Central Office. Since that time the principals had
been Mr. Art Gonzales, 1996-1998; Mrs. Lorraine Martinez, 1998-2000;
Mr. Art Gonzales, 2000-2001 and Mr. Gene Gurule, 2001-2004. Legion
Park Elementary has thirteen regular education teachers, one full-time
special education teacher, one Title One teacher, three instructional
assistants and two secretaries. |
