The Mike "Mateo" Sena Elementary
School, formerly Sapello Elementary, was first used by the students
and teachers in the Fall of 1953. Before this school was built, every
small community had its own schoolhouse. There was a schoolhouse in
each of the following communities: Las Tusas, San Ingnacio, Los Alamos,
Las Dispensas and Canon de Manuelitas. The school system was consolidated
and all the nearby communities came to attend school at Sapello.
When school first began, back in the Fall of 1953, the school building
had not been completed by the time classes started. During the warm
summer days of August and September, school was taught outside, in
which is now the playground. The students and teachers brought their
own lunches because there was no cafeteria service at the time. When
the weather started getting colder, the students and teachers were
moved inside the building. The school has been used by the East Las
Vegas City Schools system ever since. There have been a lot of changes
since the school first opened in 1953.
With these changes came the new name of the school. In June of 1994,
there was a tragic accident that shocked the community. One of the
community's young men had been killed in a heart-rending accident
(Mike "Mateo" Sena, age 17). The Multi-purpose Complex was
scheduled for completion for the Fall of 1995. At this time of construction
of the new building, the friends of Mike "Mateo" Sena, pettitioned
the East Las Vegas City School Board to see if they could name the
new complex after "Mateo". |
