Sierra Vista Elementary School opened
its door in August of 1988. The architect was James N/ Ronald Partner,
Inc. The contractor was Steven Franken Construction Company. Sierra
Vista was designed as a sister school to Los Niños Elementary.
Sierra Vista would serve 4th. and 5th. graders while Los Niños
would serve K-3rd. Grade students. In the district in a school that
was new and highly modern with computer and science labs. This would
result in many students being bused from all areas of the LVCS'
zones.
The dedication ceremony took place on November 13, 1988. The ceremony
included Mr. Fred Baca, Principal, board members, special guests,
administrators, parents and students. A United States flag was presented
to the school from Representative Bill Richardson. The flag had
been flown over Washington D.C. and is currently located in the
Sierra Vista cafeteria.
Although the concept of a centrally located upper elementary school
was a very good one, a transition to return to the "neighbor
school" concept returned in 1991-1992. All elementary schools
in the district reverted back to K-5 except for Sierra Vista. This
school would only be able to server 1st.-5th. graders because the
facilities were built to accommodate older children. Restrooms and
water fountains were too tall for Kindergarten children, as was
most of the classroom equipment. Sierra Vista is proud to say it
is the only elementary school in the district that ADA accredited
for handicapped students.
