POSITION: School Social Worker

REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education – Immediate Supervisor
Superintendent – General Supervisor

GENERAL FUNCTION:
To provide support to the individual schools implementing a system of screening and intervention services.
BASIC MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
1. Valid licensure in Social Work: LMSW or LCSW (LCSW Preferred)
2. Minimum Level 2 Licensure or Level 3 Licensure (Level 3 Preferred)

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Comply with the state approved Code of Ethics of the Education Profession and uphold and enforce department/unit rules, administrative directives and regulations, Board Policy, and State and Federal regulations.
2. The School Social Worker Complies with the approved Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Workers
3. School Social Worker serves as a member of a multi-disciplinary team consisting of administrators, school personnel, students, and families, and engages in the following activities:
a. Aids in the identification of students' needs in the school setting.
b. Attends Individual Educational Planning Committee meetings.
c. Helps formulate goals and measurable objectives for individual students.
d. Completes student/family assessments and evaluations.
e. Supports students with program transitions and ensures continuity of services.
f. Serves as an advocate for students.
4. The School Social Worker provides social work services for individual students to help alleviate social, emotional, and behavioral problems that impede school progress. These include the following activities:
a. Provides individual and group counseling.
b. Provides crisis intervention services.
c. Provides information on social, emotional, and behavioral issues within the school setting.
d. Maintains a professional relationship with students.
e. Respects students' individual concerns and provides support and encouragement by emphasizing personal strengths.
5. The School Social Worker provides services for parents and other family members in the following ways:
a. Enlists the support of parents and families to promote student success.
b. Serves as an advocate for parents and other family members.
c. Promotes home/school partnerships by providing support to parents and family members through use of school conferences and home visits.
d. Responds professionally to parent inquiries.
e. Interprets school policies to families.
f. Organize and conduct parent training, team meetings, and conferences.
g. Help families access appropriate educational and community services.
h. Conduct family assessments and refers families for family counseling when appropriate.
i. Provide family counseling.
6. The School Social Worker consults and collaborates with school administrators and school-based professionals through the following activities:
a. Participates in multidisciplinary team planning.
b. Interprets student's social/emotional needs to school personnel
c. Participates in developing behavioral management strategies for use within the school environment.
d. Serves as a resource for school staff on emotional, social, and behavioral issues.
e. Formulates and develops school-wide procedures and strategies for intervention with social, emotional, and behavioral issues.
f. Develops and provides in-service programs for school staff.
g. Participates with school staff in developing resources within the school setting which offer students emotional and moral support.
h. Contributes to staff meetings, workshops, and other school activities.
i. Interprets students' social/emotional needs to school personnel.
7. The School Social Worker works in partnership with community agencies to coordinate services for students and families through the following activities:
a. Maintains a current knowledge of community resources.
b. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with community service providers.
c. Utilizes appropriate referral procedures for community services and participates in planning for services to be provided for students and families.
d. Contributes to the development of programs within the community that will benefit students.
e. Utilizes the services of various disciplines within the community to assess and provide for the needs of students and families.
f. Serves as a field instructor for school social work practicum students.
8. The School Social Worker assists in establishing procedures for periodic review and evaluation of school social work services.
9. The School Social Worker maintains professional skills through consultation, in-service activities, and self-selected professional growth activities consistent with the requirements of the New Mexico Board of Social Work Examiners and the New Mexico State Board of Education.
10. The School Social Worker maintains an awareness and respect for the cultural diversity of students and families and assists school personnel in understanding these variations when planning for students and families.
11. The School Social Worker keeps confidential individual records for the purpose of making appropriate referrals and for maintaining continuity of schoolwork services according to public laws.
12. Perform other tasks as deemed appropriate and necessary by the administrator.

SALARY: As per district salary schedule

EVALUATION: Performance of the job will be conducted by the Director of Special Education
